Virtually Race the Focus ST for a Chance to Attend the ESPN Summer X Games.
Ford Motor Company is giving fans of the new Focus ST a chance to put the upcoming high-performance hatchback to the test before it goes on sale, by letting them enter a virtual competition that will send the winning driver to the ESPN summer X Games.
The competition puts drivers into the seat of a Focus ST driving simulator at auto shows across the country. The participant with the fastest lap time will win a host of awards, including an invite to the ESPN summer X Games for a meet-and-greet with drivers of Ford’s Octane Academy. Additional prizes also will be awarded to top times on a regional basis.
“This is the perfect way to generate awareness for our ST brand since we know our enthusiast customers love gaming,” said Lisa Schoder, ST Marketing manager. “The Focus ST simulator is tuned with the specs from the actual car, so people can get a true feel for the dynamics of ST performance.”
The challenge will live on the Focus Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/fordfocus, where a leaderboard will be posted from each show the challenge visits. When the challenge wraps in May, the best times from each show will be entered into an overall sweepstakes to determine the grand prize winner.

The New Escape All-Wheel-Drive System Gives Drivers More Control
As winter rain, ice and snow slows travel across the country, the all-new Ford Escape’s all-wheel-drive system offers drivers a little extra traction.
The new Escape’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system pre-emptively reassesses conditions about 20 times faster than it takes to blink an eye, readjusting the power split to give the driver the precise blend of handling and traction at all times.
If, for example, the front of the vehicle is on ice and the rear is on pavement, the all-wheel-drive system can send all the torque the powertrain can produce to the rear, putting power where the driver needs it.
“This is a very robust system, tested and tuned around the world in many conditions,” said Joe Torres, senior engineer, all-wheel-drive system development.
Using advanced software and sensors, the system gathers data from 25 external signals, including wheel speed, accelerator pedal position and steering wheel angle, to deliver outstanding driving performance in both wet and dry conditions as well as excellent off-road traction.
Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control
Available together for the first time in an SUV in the all-new Ford Escape, the Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control systems always pre-emptively split the torque produced by the powertrain between the front and rear axles. Splitting the torque offers several benefits to the driver. First, it transfers the power, which means when a driver corners hard, the vehicle will better follow the intended steering path. For example, if the vehicle is understeering – the tendency to go straight when cornering – the system will automatically split more torque to the rear wheels to help counteract that effect and provide more neutral steering.
Second, and new to this all-new SUV, are feedback sensors and software that calculate – based on the driver’s steering angle – where the driver wants to go versus where the vehicle is heading, and make the appropriate split.
An advanced computer uses all the inputs from an array of sensors and data – such as lateral acceleration, driver-demanded torque and steering angle – and processes that information to get the vehicle to turn in the direction the driver wants it to go. The Ford system builds on the pre-emptive actions by adding and subtracting torque as needed through an electromagnetic clutch.
All of these adjustments, corrections and calculations are made every 16 milliseconds.

Customer Demand for 2012 Ford Focus on the Rise
Customer demand for the 2012 Ford Focus is on the rise. Paul Russell, Ford Focus Marketing Manager says, “Ford dealers are seeing more small car activity, and that tells us Focus is getting on to more shopping lists.”
Focus was completely redesigned for 2012, bringing up to an 11 percent increase in highway fuel efficiency and being offered in expressive new five-door hatchback and sleek four-door sedan body styles. In addition, Focus brings unexpected convenience and luxury features such as active park assist and leather-faced seating with contrast-colored piping.
“The contemporary styling, fuel efficiency and technology offerings are getting lots of customer attention,” said Mark Wexler, Ford Northern California Regional Manager. “High-end Titanium models are selling at twice the rate we anticipated, showing that our customers want convenience and technology in their fuel-efficient Focus purchase.”
Focus is drawing new customers to the Ford showroom. Matt Wood, Dealer Principal at Elk Grove Ford in Sacramento, Calif., said this trend accelerated last month.
“Almost 40 percent of our January Focus trade-ins were import brands. Focus also is bringing in customers that have been out of the market for some time. These buyers are brand new to us,” said Wood.
A key objective for the 2012 Focus was to offer customers more choices by extending the models offered in the marketplace. Previously announced models include the highly anticipated Focus Electric and the high-performance 250 hp ST model. Additionally, in response to customer demand, Ford will now offer a five-speed manual transmission in the range-topping Titanium Focus models. Buyers migrating from higher-price import brands frequently prefer manual transmissions, especially automotive enthusiasts. Now those buyers can have a manual and their creature comforts.

More Ford EcoBoost Vehicles in 2012
Now that record sales of 127,683 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles in 2011 are on the books, Ford aims to more than triple production capacity of vehicles using this fuel-efficient technology in 2012.
Ford will expand its portfolio of fuel-efficient offerings this year with the fuel-saving 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine in the Escape and Fusion nameplates, and five new electrified vehicles.
“EcoBoost expansion and availability in high-volume nameplates such as the all-new Ford Escape and Fusion will take this affordable, fuel-saving technology to the heart of the market,” said Ford Group Vice President of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering Sue Cischke. “Ford is committed to delivering class-leading fuel economy for our customers, which benefits the environment and helps the U.S. move toward greater energy independence.”
The full-size Taurus sedan becomes the first Ford vehicle to offer customers a choice between two EcoBoost engines. It will offer a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder making an estimated 237 horsepower and giving customers up to an anticipated class-leading 31 mpg, while the iconic Taurus SHO sport sedan features a 365-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 delivering 25 mpg highway.
The green and mean Focus ST arrives this year as a high-performance – yet fuel-efficient – sport compact EcoBoost application.
Additionally, Ford offers an EcoBoost-powered Police Interceptor for 2012. It is the first-ever turbocharged law-enforcement vehicle offering.
By the end of 2012, nine Ford models will deliver or are anticipated to deliver an EPA-certified 40 mpg highway or higher, with still more fuel-efficient vehicles on the way.

January Note from Tom Barton
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Season and have had a good start to 2012! I want to thank everyone in our Beach Ford Family for making 2011 a great year. For the second year in a row, Beach Ford’s new vehicle sales improved by over 20% and our service and parts sales also showed improvement vs. the previous year. Our family of customers is the reason for our success and it feels good to be growing again!
2012 should be another great one for Ford Motor Company and Beach Ford. There are four impressive new models coming out this year that will provide plenty of excitement throughout the year. First, will be a Focus ST sports coupe that will have a 2.0L Ecoboost engine, capable of 250 horse power! This car is really something and will give Beach Ford customers who are into small performance cars, plenty to brag about! This vehicle should be available before Spring.
Next will be a re-freshed 2013 Taurus with enough of a new look to reinvigorate the full size, upscale buyer who appreciates a little luxury without paying the luxury price tag.
Then comes the all new, completely re-designed, 2013 Ford Escape! This vehicle will be available in the Spring also, and is a beauty with a sleek new design that will change the way you look at a small SUV.
Later this Summer, the 2013 Ford Fusion will make its way to our showroom floor. I have seen this vehicle in its planning stages for over two years on my trips to Dearborn. It is nothing short of stunning. It just won “Car of the Show” at the Detroit Auto Show that is going on through January 20th. I know of no other mid-size sedan with as much elegant style as the new Fusion – it will be truly a game changing product for us and it will be available this summer. The best way to describe it is “Aston – Martin infused with plenty of Detroit DNA!” Just beautiful!
It was not so long ago that I might struggle a bit when writing a column like this, concerning future products. There just wasn’t that much coming out – at least worth writing about, anyway. Ford makes this easy now and it makes this business more exciting and more fulfilling than ever. I look forward to seeing you at our showroom sometime soon! It is going to be an exciting year!
Thank you for being a part of the Beach Ford Family,
Tom Barton
Fusion Named Autoweek’s “Best in Show” at NAIAS
Just days after being revealed to the world, the new Ford Fusion is already bringing home awards. The Autoweek editorial staff has chosen Fusion for its Best in Show award at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).
The selection is based on one compelling measurement – the car people will remember most five years from now.
“It’s very rare for a midsize sedan to win Best in Show,” said Autoweek Editor Wes Raynal. “I think it’s the first of a lot of awards the Fusion is going to win this year.”
The highest award from Autoweek comes just one day after the car received the prestigious Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology’s EyesOn Design award at NAIAS.
Fusion is the first sedan to offer gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions – each expected to deliver top fuel economy and an engaging driving experience.
“I’ve been with the company for 13 years,” said J Mays, Ford chief creative officer, “and I can truly say this is the best car ever to come out of the design and engineering center in Dearborn. We are delighted for the entire global design team, because this really was a global effort.”

In-Car Health and Wellness Research
Ford, Microsoft, Healthrageous and BlueMetal Architects recently announced an alliance to research technology to help people monitor and maintain health and wellness while on the move.
The alliance was unveiled during the “Doctor in Your Car” keynote address at the Digital Health Summit at the International CES.
“People are spending more time in their cars, and with the tremendous growth in mobile healthcare solutions, Ford is dedicated to understanding the value of being able to connect to health and wellness-related services while driving,” said Gary Strumolo, manager of Infotainment, Interiors, Health and Wellness at Ford Research and Innovation. “Our connectivity platform – Ford SYNC – provides easy, voice-controlled access to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, and therefore it makes sense to research areas that are important to our customers.”
Customer research and societal trends suggest there’s a strong business case for Ford to explore opportunities in health and wellness technology, Strumolo said.
The car that cares
Strumolo said Ford seeks to develop “the car that cares.” As people spend more time in their cars, the ability to manage health and wellness on the go becomes more important.
The goal is to figure out how to extend health management into the personal vehicle in a nonintrusive fashion. The prototype system was designed by BlueMetal Architects.
Using information collected from blood pressure monitors, activity monitors and glucose meters along with behavioral data shared by the user, Healthrageous is able to help people lead healthier lifestyles by shedding unhealthy habits.
Microsoft’s contribution is to translate robotic sensory information provided by the vehicle into an application that also provides a voice and touch-screen interface, while integrating biometrical data that come from a wearable device.
Ford SYNC allows this all to be done hands-free.
“This alliance signifies an important step in bringing health innovation into people’s everyday lives,” said Todd Bremner, chief technical officer for BlueMetal Architects. “Ford’s SYNC platform allows us to imagine, design and build natural user experiences leveraging voice and touch, which seamlessly bring wellness into your everyday commute.”

Ford Focus Electric Expected to Deliver 100 MPGe
The all-new, gasoline-free Ford Focus Electric is Ford’s first-ever all-electric passenger car – a zero-CO2-emissions version of Ford’s popular small car expected to be the first of its kind to achieve the equivalent of a 100 miles per gallon fuel efficiency rating with seating for five.
Focus Electric is the first all-electric vehicle to feature faster charging technology, allowing it to fully recharge in three to four hours – half the time of Nissan Leaf. This technology can help double the car’s range during a busy day of driving and recharging multiple times.
“Focus Electric’s innovative faster charging technology can help customers save money and get much more out of the car in a busy day of running around town and recharging between stops,” said Sherif Marakby, director of Ford’s Electrification Programs and Engineering. “We also are pleased the Focus Electric will break the 100 MPGe mark – a great symbol of how Ford has transformed its fleet with many vehicles delivering leading fuel economy and efficiency.”
With 20 years of Ford research and innovation behind electrified vehicle software and hardware technology, the company offers proven engineering and design with Focus Electric. Ford holds approximately 500 patents, with several hundred patent-pending applications on technologies used in the new Focus Electric and its other electrified vehicles.
Focus Electric reflects Ford’s commitment to deliver fuel-efficient vehicles without sacrificing performance, capability or driving fun. Though range and miles per gallon equivalent figures are yet to be finalized, Focus Electric is expected to be competitive with other comparable all-electric vehicles.
“Focus Electric was designed to deliver the same dynamics and quality of a conventional Ford Focus,” said Eric Kuehn, Focus Electric chief nameplate engineer. “It shares many of the same premium components and features as its gasoline-powered counterpart while delivering distinct efficiencies and a uniquely exciting driving experience.”

Focus ST for the Road, Focus ST-R for the Track
The new Focus ST is Ford’s first truly global performance car. Available for both the street and the track, and with innovative design and technology throughout, the new Focus ST will be more powerful and surprisingly fuel efficient, raising the bar once again when it comes to handling too.
“The new Focus ST is a really exciting car for Ford,” said Jost Capito, director of Global Performance Vehicles. “It’s the first performance model to build upon the design and technology strengths of one of our new global production vehicles. It’s a car built for driving enthusiasts around the world, and they will not be disappointed.”
Focus ST delivers the same driving attributes that make all Ford Sport Technologies models stand out amongst the competition. The chassis, engine, sound and comfort of the car are tuned harmoniously to deliver a truly sporting experience with a level of refinement rarely seen in this type of vehicle.
Purpose-built racer
Despite its close resemblance to the Focus ST road car, the Focus ST-R is purpose-built for the track by Ford Racing in North America as a fully prepared competition car. It features a powerful 2.0-liter EcoBoost® engine, FIA-regulation roll cage, uprated brakes and track-tuned suspension.
Performance for the road or the track
Focus ST is powered by the 2.0-liter Ford EcoBoost engine, which offers an uncompromising mix of performance and efficiency. Ford’s lightweight, all-aluminum EcoBoost engine provides the power of a larger engine in a fuel-efficient smaller displacement using three key technologies.
High-pressure direct injection, low-inertia turbocharging and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) all help to create an advanced combustion system that brings new levels of performance and fuel efficiency to Ford’s gasoline engines.
Focus prominent in motorsports strategy
Focus ST-R is part of an aggressive motorsports presence for Ford as its strategy to support motorsports development across its core global vehicle platforms gains traction. Ford is applying engineering and development expertise for vehicles like Focus ST-R to spur success in competition, similar to that being enjoyed by the Fiesta in RallyCross and X Games.
As the ST-R seeks to make its name on the track, the production Focus ST gives sporting enthusiasts an opportunity to enjoy a performance vehicle on everyday roads.

Ford Adds “Do Not Disturb” Feature to MyKey
Ford is adding a feature to its MyKey® technology to block incoming phone calls and deter text messages while teens are behind the wheel.
The Do Not Disturb feature, which is available on all 2011 vehicles featuring SYNC® with MyFord Touch®, will be available as a feature parents can control through MyKey beginning with the new Explorer in early 2012.
Unlike turning the phone off, drivers can still make voice-activated outgoing phone calls and the SYNC 911 Assist™ feature can make a call in case of emergency.
“Adding Do Not Disturb to MyKey is yet another way Ford is helping parents to encourage their kids to drive safer,” said Andy Sarkisian, Ford Safety Planning and Strategy manager. “We are continually listening to our customers and responding to parents’ desire to make sure their kids are paying attention to the road, not their cell phone.”
Along with the added Do Not Disturb feature, MyKey features include:
• A top speed of 65,70,75or 80 mph
• “No belts, no tunes” feature that mutes audio system until front occupants buckle up
• The ability to block satellite radio channels carrying adult programming
• Volume control that can limit the audio system to 44 percent of maximum output
• Traction control system cannot be deactivated
• A speed chime alert at 45, 55 or 65 mph
• Early low-fuel warning beginning at 75 miles until empty
“Our dealers tell us that when they have a buyer with kids in the house and they mention the MyKey feature, every single one of them says, ‘How do I turn that on?’ Customers are very happy with the feature,” Sarkisian said.

New Lane Keeping System Can Detect Drowsy Drivers
An innovative new Lane Keeping System will be available in the 2012 Ford Explorer that can warn drivers if it detects they are getting too tired to drive.
Ford will introduce in early 2012 an innovative Lane Keeping System with three unique features designed to help drivers stay in control behind the wheel, including a Driver Alert System that can notify drivers if it detects signs of drowsiness. In this case, a coffee cup light will appear on the dashboard instrument cluster to suggest the driver take a break.
“The Explorer is loaded with new innovations, including this new lane keeping technology that helps drivers stay in control of their vehicle if they drift out of their lane or show signs of drowsiness,” says Raj Nair, vice president, Engineering, Ford Global Product Development.
The system uses a small forward-facing camera mounted on the windshield behind the rear view mirror, and is able to identify lane markings on both sides of the vehicle.
When the vehicle is on the move, the camera looks at the road ahead and predicts where the vehicle should be positioned relative to the lane markings.
“Our engineering teams tested this technology for thousands of miles in many parts of the country to help ensure it performs on a wide range of roads with different lane markings,” said Michael Kane, vehicle engineering supervisor for Driver Assistance Technologies for Ford.

New Colors for Fords
The new exterior colors for Ford’s upcoming vehicles range from classic neutrals to strong earthy tones reflected in products from home furnishings to haute couture.
“The new colors coming on vehicles this year are fresh, rich and grounding,” said Susan Swek, group chief designer, Color & Material Design. “We don’t just choose a color and it winds up on a car. We study and understand how important color is to all kinds of our customers.”
New color choices arriving on the freshest vehicles from Ford include:
• Ginger Ale, which will be seen on the all-new Ford Escape when it debuts at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, was named for its energy and refreshing qualities. A classic gold neutral with slight green undertones, it’s found naturally in rocks, minerals and sandy beaches as well as jewelry, gems and textiles
• Kodiak Brown, named after Alaska’s Kodiak bear for its richness and strong presence, is a deep brown with slight warm highlights. The fashion industry pairs it as a neutral with black, caramels, blues and greens
• Frosted Glass, a signature color of the Ford Focus Electric, is an icy light green that elicits a sense of calm, relaxation and tranquility, remindful of a spa or warm tropical waters. Seen in the fashion world, from light shades of green to dark teal<
“The technology available today has given us so many more options,” Swek said. “We are able to manipulate color, and play with the tones and shades and do absolutely remarkable things.”
Finding inspiration
These innovative colors are the result of hundreds of hours of work by today’s designers finding inspiration everywhere.
“We get ideas from nature, art, architecture, technology – everything,” said Swek. “We look at social influences, trend services, what’s selling now in a variety of industries and what has sold in the past.”
Ford designers work together globally on a timetable three years into the future. They also study all aspects of global culture to roadmap which vehicle colors should be popular at which time.
Color is worth the research time: “I’ve talked to dealers who’ve told me people have bought a car off the lot because of the color,” said Swek.
Research backs that up: Up to 40 percent of car buyers said they would walk out of a dealership if they could not buy a vehicle in the color they wanted.
Even the names of today’s colors are carefully developed.
“It’s important that the color name matches the personality of the vehicle,” said Swek. “Customers become emotionally connected to names. The name ‘Champagne’ is a lot different than the name ‘Sand,’ and all of that has to be carefully considered before a vehicle is ever presented to the public.”

New 36-Gallon Fuel Tank Allows Customers to Drive Up to 756 Miles on One Tank
With its new standard 36-gallon fuel tank, the powerful and fuel-efficient 2012 Ford F-150 EcoBoost® pickup can drive nearly the entire length of California – from Oregon to Mexico – on one tank of gas.
Responding to customer demand, F-150 EcoBoost now has a driving range of 756 miles between fill-ups. That long-distance highway cruising range is designed to save F-150 drivers time by reducing stops for fuel.
“We know the majority of our customers use their F-150s daily for work or play. It’s an essential tool that enhances their productivity,” said Doug Scott, Ford Truck Group Marketing Manager. “Reducing downtime for fuel stops can help them do their jobs more efficiently or get more out of their leisure time.”
Since April, the F-150 EcoBoost has accounted for more than 40 percent of all F-150 sales. The EcoBoost engine can tow an industry-leading 11,300 pounds.
“The F-150’s 365-horsepower, 420 lb.-ft. of torque EcoBoost engine already delivers best-in-class towing,” said Scott. “Now, the 36-gallon fuel tank gives Ford truck customers an unbeatable combination of capability and driving range.”

The All-New Global Ford Ranger
The all-new global Ford Ranger emanates power and presence from every angle, echoing the toughness and capability this light commercial pickup truck is geared to deliver.
Ranger’s high levels of spaciousness, comfort and craftsmanship further complete its transformation into a reliable workhorse as well as a refined family vehicle that can easily carry five adults in the Super and Double Cab models.
Ranger will be offered in three cab body styles – Single, Super and Double – all of which are among the roomiest in the Ranger’s segment.
“We tailored Ranger’s series and configurations to accommodate a variety of customer applications and lifestyles around the world. Each series looks fantastic on its own,” said Craig Metros, chief designer of the all-new Ranger.
The New Look of Tough
Blending the “Built Ford Tough” theme and kinetic design cues into a styling the designers call “21st Century Tough,” the team has designed a pickup that looks up-to-date as well as rugged.
“When it comes to designing cars and trucks, it’s all about nailing the proportions – the tires to body stance, short front overhang, windscreen angle, and the right body to side glass relationship,” said Metros, a 24-year Ford veteran who has had an influential hand in Ford pickup design around the world.
“Our goal was to match the overall looks and presence to the capability and on-off road performance that the all-new Ranger will deliver. I believe we achieved a very confident, capable, modern, and sophisticated, Built Ford Tough pickup truck for the global market.”
A Deeper Box
The higher belt line and raised rails of the load box increase Ranger’s functionality. The Single Cab and Super Cab pickup versions have some of the largest box volumes in their class at 1.82 cubic meters and 1.45 cubic meters respectively while the Double Cab is among the top with 1.21 cubic meters.
Comfortable and Functional Interior
The all-new Ranger offers a stylish look and feel with features and comfort normally found in passenger cars. Designers combined tough functionality, high-quality materials and ergonomic controls that look high-tech to create an interior that is tough but not rough.
Great care was taken when selecting the interior color scheme, so that worksite dirt doesn’t show while ensuring the surfaces do not appear too dark. Graphics and textures were also used throughout the cabin to accentuate areas such as buttons and switches that customers touch and interact with the most. A combination of colors, grain and non-reflective materials help control glare and veiling on the windscreen, hence improving visibility and safety.
All seats are finished with materials that will stand up to the demands of a workhorse while delivering a lasting quality appearance. From the no-fuss finish of the base-model XL to the cloth and leather trim of the Wildtrak, all materials used in the new Ranger were subjected to heavy-duty testing for commercial vehicle use.
“We’ve paid careful attention to every little detail to deliver a pickup truck that is world-class both inside and out,” said Metros. “The all-new Ford Ranger is every bit as capable, modern and dynamic as it looks and feels.”

Ford’s New Door Edge Protector
The feature called Door Edge Protector will debut in January 2012 on the Ford Focus. The system – designed by Ford engineers in Cologne, Germany – works automatically when the door is opened. A protective flap concealed in the door moves into position in a fraction of a second as the door opens providing a buffer that prevents damage to paint and body work.
“The Door Edge Protector will be one of those features that we think will make customers say ‘Why didn’t someone think of this sooner?’” said Matthias Tensing, product development system engineer. “It will be relief to parents with children in the backseat or anyone who needs to park in a tight spot.”
Offering maximum protection with minimal impact on weight and without affecting existing mechanisms or side impact performance, the Door Edge Protector retracts in just 60 milliseconds to allow for doors being slammed shut and includes a clutch mechanism that prevents damage if the flap is obstructed when returning. A special rubber compound is used that can withstand thousands of usage cycles and creates a minimum of noise as it springs into position. The protective flap is quickly and easily removed by heavy users, with a replacement unit simply clipping into place.

Focus ST at Frankfurt Motor Show
Ford’s first global performance car, the new Focus ST, is finally out of production. The new model combines strong performance, exceptional handling, eye-catching style and everyday refinement. Focus ST will launch around the world in 2012, being sold in over 40 countries spanning six continents.
Powered by a 2.0-liter Ford EcoBoost engine mated to a specially revised six-speed manual transmission, Focus ST offers an uncompromising mix of performance and efficiency. The lightweight, all-aluminum engine delivers a maximum output of 250PS (246 hp) and peak torque of 360Nm (265 lb/ft), yet helps cut CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by more than 20 percent compared to the previous-generation European Focus ST.
Alongside the five-door model, Ford is also revealing a special treat for European customers – the stylish Focus ST Wagon. A unique offering in the segment, the Wagon shows just how far the performance DNA of an ST model can stretch.
“There’s nothing comparable in the market to the Focus ST Wagon,” said Jost Capito, director of Global Performance Vehicles. “It builds on the practical element of the Focus ST but doesn’t take away any of the performance, handling abilities or refinement of the five-door model. Wagons are very popular in many of the major European countries so we have high hopes for the ST wagon being a great success.”

Smallest Engine is Focus-Bound
Ford is expanding its range of EcoBoost engines with the addition of an all-new three-cylinder 1.0-liter engine that will become available in Focus, C-MAX and B-MAX next year.
Ford will introduce two versions of the engine in Focus in early 2012 – with 100PS and 120PS and five-speed and six-speed manual transmissions respectively.
With its 1.0-liter capacity, the three-cylinder EcoBoost engine will be the smallest unit currently produced by Ford. Yet, despite its small proportions, it delivers power and performance to rival a traditional 1.6-liter gas engine while emitting less than 120g/km CO2 in the Focus.
“By offering the Focus with an advanced 1.0-litre petrol engine Ford is not only making a major statement on how serious we are about engine downsizing – it also shows the strength of our development and engineering capabilities. To produce a 1.0-litre petrol engine with such impressive performance and fuel economy is a clear example of our commitment to be class-leading in fuel economy,” said Graham Hoare, executive director, Powertrain, Ford of Europe.

Ford EVOS Concept
Ford will debut the Ford Evos Concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It represents the ultimate expression of Ford’s new global design language, and explores key future powertrain and vehicle technologies.
The vehicle introduces Ford’s first truly global design language as the momentum of the company’s One Ford product plan continues to build.
“The Ford Evos Concept unites three key elements which are at the core of our One Ford global product strategy: outstanding design, smart technologies and fuel economy leadership,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president of Global Product Development.
“With its compelling design and innovative technology experience, this is a clear demonstration of the exciting vision we have for the Ford brand. While you will never see this car on the road, the next generation of Ford products around the world will display many of the distinctive design ideas and advanced technologies it showcases.”
Technology vision for enriched customer experience
The concept’s technology experience embraces a new generation of driver interaction and awareness currently under development in the Ford Research and Innovation laboratories. Seamless connectivity between the vehicle and the driver’s ‘personal cloud’ of information is at the heart of the vision for its capabilities.
“The possibilities are fascinating when we explore how to enable a seamless lifestyle between home, office and car linked by access to the driver’s personal information,” said Paul Mascarenas, chief technical officer and vice president of Ford Research and Innovation.
The personalized, cloud-connected lifestyle
Drawing from a detailed understanding of the driver’s preferences and driving habits, the Ford Evos Concept combines this personal information with additional data from the cloud, such as the driver’s work schedule and local traffic or weather conditions. This information provides a personalized and seamless experience as the driver transitions in and out of the car.
It could automatically play the same music or news program that was just streaming at home, for example, or heat or cool the interior to an ideal temperature before the driver gets in without having to be requested by predicting departure time based on his calendar.
Enhanced driving experience
Learning driver habits and capabilities, the technology can overlay map and weather data sourced from the cloud to adjust powertrain, steering, suspension and braking systems for optimum enjoyment, comfort and safety.
Driver wellness
With a seamless connection to the cloud, the Ford Evos Concept monitors the physical state and workload of the driver and adjusts the driving experience accordingly.
In dynamic driving situations, the vehicle may simplify the appearance of the instrument panel to display only necessary gauge information and switch the driver’s connected smartphone to “Do Not Disturb” mode to help keep the focus of attention on the road.
Cloud-optimized hybrid powertrain
Completing the vision for the Ford Evos Concept is a state-of-the-art lithium-ion plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain providing the same next-generation performance and fuel economy as the Ford C-MAX Energi scheduled for introduction in North America in 2012 and Europe in 2013.
Ford ‘powersplit’ hybrid architecture allows the electric motor and gas engine to work together or separately to maximize efficiency. Cloud connectivity would provide further opportunities to enhance performance and efficiency by selecting the optimum combination of powertrain modes for any given journey.

A Note From Tom Barton: Ford is Back in the CAR Business!
Dear Beach Ford Family,
It’s good to be back! Back in the CAR business, I mean. For the last decade or more, Ford has really only been in the truck and SUV business – yes, we still sold a lot of Mustangs, but Mustang is really a different animal than the regular, to-and-from work, everyday car transportation. The dollars made on large SUV’s and trucks and relatively low fuel costs, unfortunately, caused the Detroit manufacturers to invest less in their car offerings and to almost ignore the small, fuel-efficient segments. Fortunately, the Ford Motor Company has seen the error of their ways and now has world-class offerings ranging from the fuel-sipping, but well appointed Fiesta, all the way up to the affordable luxury of the new Taurus! At Beach Ford, it feels great to be back in the car business!
Two of the hottest new cars in the business, are the 2012 Ford Focus and the 2012 Ford Fiesta.
The Fiesta is the smallest vehicle offering, but don’t let it’s size fool you – in addition to getting over 40 mpg/hwy, this vehicle has plenty of power thanks to its 1.6L, 4 cylinder engine and its features are like those found on much higher-end cars. It is a car for people who just prefer a small car and don’t want to compromise on ride or amenities. From its sound system to SYNC to its interior, you will feel like you’re driving a small luxury car made for the Autobahn!
With Focus, you get a slightly larger car equipped with a 2.0L, 4-cylinder engine that is capable of 40 mpg/hwy and a body style reminiscent of European sports sedans. This, again, is a car with all the modern technology and amenities that are typically not found in smaller cars! You really need to drive this car, as its lower cost of operation and its superior styling may just have you driving a smaller car than you ever thought about. This is a real game-changer!
Having a full compliment of larger cars, as well as the appealing smaller, fuel-efficient ones makes me glad to be a Ford dealer. For too long, we were just good at making world-class trucks – now we make the cars to go along. Every day, people stop me in the dealership and remark about how far Ford cars have come. Having a no apologies car line-up makes our dealership more complete and able to service a far greater spectrum of clientele. Come see us at Beach Ford, even if you aren’t in the market for a car! I know you’ll be impressed!
Thank you for being a part of the Beach Ford Family,
Tom Barton
Attention 2012 Mustang Boss 302 Owners: The TRACK ATTACK Awaits!
For new 2012 Mustang Boss 302 owners, the unique chance to take part in a “track attack” is now a reality.
As part of a complimentary program offered by Team Mustang and Ford Racing, instructors at the Ford Racing High Performance Driving School at Miller Motorsports Park are offering all new 2012 Mustang Boss 302 owners a chance to learn what their car is capable of on the race track.
The Boss Track Attack provides owners with a full immersion into the Boss experience, with driving instruction and extensive track time with professional instructors. The intent is to enable Boss 302 owners to learn just how capable the new car is.
“This is the first program of its kind from Ford. We’re so proud of the new Boss 302 that we wanted to offer owners the opportunity to stretch their legs – and carve corners – on one of the coolest tracks in America,” said Mickey Matus, marketing manager, Ford Racing. “The Boss 302 is such a legendary nameplate, and our latest version is such a tremendous, fun-to-drive car that we wanted to ensure this exclusive group of owners learn all they could about it, and experience its capabilities in the fun, controlled environment that Miller Motorsports Park can provide.”
Boss owners need not bring their own cars. Miller Motorsports Park has a fleet of track-ready Boss 302s on hand for this driving experience.
The one-day experience begins with a private reception and dinner the evening before at the Larry H. Miller Total Performance Museum at the track, where participants and guests will learn about the history of the Boss nameplate. They will be given behind-the-scenes access to some of the stories behind the development of the Boss 302 and will get a private tour of Larry Miller’s amazing personal collection of high-performance Ford and Shelby vehicles.
The next day, owners will start with a dynamic classroom session with school instructors, then spend the rest of the morning learning car control, cornering, braking and vehicle dynamic techniques, before breaking for lunch in the track’s clubhouse.
The afternoon session features more on-track driving including lead and follow exercises, instructor ride-alongs and hot laps with professional drivers. The day finishes with participating owners receiving a special graduation pack from the team.
2012 Mustang Boss 302 owners can now register for their complimentary Boss Track Attack sessions slot at www.bosstrackattack.com or by calling 435-27-SPEED.

Kbb.com’s Top 2011 Back-to-School Cars
Choosing a car for yourself is a tough decision. But choosing a car for your child? That’s a far more difficult decision, because that car will transfer your most precious possession.
Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com has announced its picks for the 2011 Top 10 Back-to-School Cars, a mix of both new and used cars and trucks. The list focuses on safety, affordability, versatility, fuel-efficiency and attractiveness.
Ford has two vehicles on the list:
The 2012 Focus
Young drivers love the Focus, kbb says, because “it looks cool on the outside, modern on the inside, handles with more than a hint of sportiness and offers advanced audio and information technology.”
For those who subscribe to “bigger is better,” kbb says the 2007 Ford F-150 is their back to school ride. It “boasts five-star NHTSA front crash ratings, beefy good looks and all the practical hauling and towing abilities afforded by a proper pickup truck.”
Stop by Beach Ford in Virginia Beach or Suffolk to take either of these two Back-to-School cars for a test drive today.

The “Blue Angels” Edition of the 2012 Ford Mustang GT
Ford Motor Company has produced a truly unique “Blue Angels” edition 2012 Ford Mustang GT. This one-of-a-kind vehicle will be sold at the Gathering of Eagles charity auction July 28, during the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) 2011 AirVenture Oshkosh, the world’s greatest aviation celebration.
All proceeds from the car donation and sale will benefit the EAA Young Eagles organization, which has provided free introductory flights to more than 1.6 million young people since 1992 while also teaching the value of hard work, personal responsibility and enhanced math and science skills.
Ford is the exclusive automotive partner of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, held July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
“The precision, discipline and excitement that define the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels flight team are qualities we celebrate at Ford,” said Edsel B. Ford II, a member of Ford’s board of directors. “With this year’s beautiful ‘Blue Angels’ edition Mustang GT, we’ve captured those qualities and paired them with the innovation Ford design and engineering team members build into all of our vehicles. Through this project, we take great pride in continuing our support for EAA and the Young Eagles organization.”
The Ford “Blue Angels” Mustang pays tribute to 100 years of naval aviation, which will be celebrated all week at AirVenture 2011.
The exterior of Ford’s “Blue Angels” Mustang GT was inspired by the acclaimed naval aviation performance demonstration team and the F-18 Hornet aircraft it flies. The car’s custom rear spoiler’s vertical tailfins, the “screaming yellow” gloss accents, inclusion of the Blue Angels script and crest all are drawn from the Navy aircraft. The unique chrome blue paint, courtesy of Creations n’ Chrome, is unlike anything available on a production vehicle anywhere in the world.
Under the hood, the “Blue Angels” Mustang is all performance with a Ford Racing supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 624 horsepower. The Ford Racing components also include a handling pack, performance exhaust and racetrack brakes.
The “Blue Angels” edition joins three other one-of-a-kind Mustangs created by the Ford design and engineering teams for the EAA Young Eagles Auction in recent years, each generating excitement among aviation and automotive enthusiasts alike. Ford vehicles sold at auction during past EAA AirVenture events have collectively raised more than $1.3 million to support Young Eagles.

Sales of Hatchbacks Skyrocket
U.S. sales of hatchbacks continues to skyrocket as customers are seek more versatile vehicles with better fuel economy.
It’s a trend reflected in sales of two of Ford’s hottest-selling cars. Approximately 50 percent of retail sales of the 2011 Fiesta have been for hatchbacks. On the market for just a few months, 41 percent of retail sales for the all-new 2012 Focus have been for the hatchback – a number Ford expects to continue rising.
“The hatchback is hitting an unmet need for versatility as people continue to downsize their vehicles,” said Paul Russell, Focus brand manager. “No other competitor in the top-five of total market share offers a hatchback option in the small car segment.”
The total number of hatchbacks available in the U.S. market increased 63 percent between model years 2006 and 2010, going from 291,853 to 475,048, according to Ward’s Auto World data.
“American car buyers have become appreciative of the convenience and flexibility that hatchback bodystyles offer after years of owning SUVs and crossovers,” said George Pipas, Ford sales analyst. “Combined with the generation of younger drivers who have been exposed to popular high-performance hatchback offerings in Europe and Asia, we may be seeing the beginning of a shift in buyer acceptance of hatchbacks.”
Hatchbacks for space and fuel efficiency
Today’s hatchbacks offer more cargo space than sedans. The five-door Focus hatchback provides an additional 10.6 cubic feet compared with the sedan model and features a wide cargo opening and fold-flat load floor. The Focus delivers up to 40 mpg on the highway.
The five-door Fiesta hatchback also brings additional cargo room to the table, providing 15.4 cubic feet of space.
“Our fun, vibrant Fiesta customers like the versatility of the hatchback’s access to cargo both inside and outside the vehicle,” said Sherryl Brightwell, Fiesta brand manager. “The additional square footage allows the on-the-go customer the ability to maximize cargo space when needed.”
The hatchback Fiesta is styled to have a “sporty, Euro-racing” feel, along with impressive fuel economy that delivers up to 40 mpg.

The 2012 Ford Focus Serves as Pace Car for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
The all-new 2012 Ford Focus, which delivers an EPA-certified 40 miles per gallon on the highway, served yesterday as pace car at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at the Michigan International Speedway.
While NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers had to pit five or six times during the 400-mile race, the 2012 Focus, with its outstanding fuel economy, could go race distance and more, pushing 497 miles (or 248 laps at Michigan International Speedway) before needing to pit.
Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas, was behind the wheel Sunday as the “celebrity” pace car driver.
“Bringing the 43-car field to the green flag will be an honor, but the real highlight of my day will be showing millions of race fans at MIS and across the country how much fun the new Focus is to drive,” Fields said before the race. “Focus delivers on high-speed ovals, challenging, twisty roads and everything in between. This car – built right here in Michigan – is built for people who love to drive.”
Focus is Ford’s most significant global car with more than 10 million units sold since being launched in 1998.
“When I saw the new Focus, I couldn’t believe it,” said Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne. “I think this car is going to appeal to a lot of young people like myself because it offers the latest technology and has that sporty look many of us want when we go shopping for a car.”
Ford hopes consumers nationwide share Bayne’s reaction.
“Just like last year when we unveiled Fiesta as the Michigan pace car, we’re using this race as a platform to promote another one of our fun-to-drive, fuel-efficient vehicles,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “Focus is a fantastic car that has captured the imagination of consumers everywhere, and we hope our fans are going to like what they see when it hits the track on Sunday.”
Ford has been at the forefront of using its NASCAR pace car program to highlight its extensive line of new cars, trucks and sport utility vehicles. This includes being the first company to have Hybrid pace the start of a NASCAR race when the Fusion Hybrid led the field to green for the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2009. In addition, the Mustang GT 5.0L V-8 and all-new 2011 Explorer SUV have served as pace vehicles within the last year.

Kbb.com Rates Ford Focus Most Fit For Students

Kbb.com puts out an annual list of top road trip cars. This year, the site did a twist on that, identifying 10 life stages of the American driver on the road today and matching each stage with the most fitting new car.
For 2011, kbb.com editors put the 2012 Ford Focus at the head of the class as the ride that’s most fit for students who long for the open road. Kbb.com says the Focus “looks cool, sports an upscale interior, rides and handles incredibly well and costs about the same as some more boring compact cars.”
The five-door hatchback with extra cargo room is recommended for added storage, and Focus fuel economy of 38 mpg (40 mpg for the SFE sedan) is “not to be overlooked.”
Stop by Beach Ford in Virginia Beach or Suffolk this weekend to take a Ford Focus for a cool, sporty test drive of your own.
The All-New Police Interceptor to Lower Fuel Costs for Law Enforcement
Ford’s all-new Police Interceptor will save America’s law enforcement agencies millions of dollars a year on fuel costs.
With three powerful and fuel-efficient V6 engines, the new Police Interceptor lineup is expected to deliver average fuel economy gains of 20 to 25 percent over the Crown Victoria, which ends production later this year. The market leader for the past 15 years, the current Crown Victoria police car is rated at 14 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department – the largest sheriff’s department in the world – operates a fleet of 6,200 vehicles that patrol an area the size of Connecticut. In 2010, those vehicles drove more than 27 million miles. A fleet-wide 20 percent fuel economy gain would save the department at least $20 million a year at today’s fuel prices of nearly $4 per gallon.
“We set out to deliver our new portfolio of Police Interceptors to be industry-leading from durability to performance, including taking on one of the most important challenges for agencies today, fuel efficiency,” said Kevin Koswick, director of Ford’s North American Fleet Operations. “With Ford’s new Police Interceptors, we took the industry benchmark, our Crown Victoria, and improved every element including delivering up to a 25 percent improvement in fuel economy.”
The improved efficiency of the new Police Interceptors is part of Ford’s corporate goal to lead or be among the leaders in fuel economy in every segment in which the company competes.
