Post Icon Virtually Race the Focus ST for a Chance to Attend the ESPN Summer X Games.

Ford Motor Company is giving fans of the new Focus ST a chance to put the upcoming high-performance hatchback to the test before it goes on sale, by letting them enter a virtual competition that will send the winning driver to the ESPN summer X Games.

The competition puts drivers into the seat of a Focus ST driving simulator at auto shows across the country. The participant with the fastest lap time will win a host of awards, including an invite to the ESPN summer X Games for a meet-and-greet with drivers of Ford’s Octane Academy. Additional prizes also will be awarded to top times on a regional basis.

“This is the perfect way to generate awareness for our ST brand since we know our enthusiast customers love gaming,” said Lisa Schoder, ST Marketing manager. “The Focus ST simulator is tuned with the specs from the actual car, so people can get a true feel for the dynamics of ST performance.”

The challenge will live on the Focus Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/fordfocus, where a leaderboard will be posted from each show the challenge visits. When the challenge wraps in May, the best times from each show will be entered into an overall sweepstakes to determine the grand prize winner.

Post Icon Customer Demand for 2012 Ford Focus on the Rise

Customer demand for the 2012 Ford Focus is on the rise. Paul Russell, Ford Focus Marketing Manager says, “Ford dealers are seeing more small car activity, and that tells us Focus is getting on to more shopping lists.”

Focus was completely redesigned for 2012, bringing up to an 11 percent increase in highway fuel efficiency and being offered in expressive new five-door hatchback and sleek four-door sedan body styles. In addition, Focus brings unexpected convenience and luxury features such as active park assist and leather-faced seating with contrast-colored piping.

“The contemporary styling, fuel efficiency and technology offerings are getting lots of customer attention,” said Mark Wexler, Ford Northern California Regional Manager. “High-end Titanium models are selling at twice the rate we anticipated, showing that our customers want convenience and technology in their fuel-efficient Focus purchase.”

Focus is drawing new customers to the Ford showroom. Matt Wood, Dealer Principal at Elk Grove Ford in Sacramento, Calif., said this trend accelerated last month.

“Almost 40 percent of our January Focus trade-ins were import brands. Focus also is bringing in customers that have been out of the market for some time. These buyers are brand new to us,” said Wood.

A key objective for the 2012 Focus was to offer customers more choices by extending the models offered in the marketplace. Previously announced models include the highly anticipated Focus Electric and the high-performance 250 hp ST model. Additionally, in response to customer demand, Ford will now offer a five-speed manual transmission in the range-topping Titanium Focus models. Buyers migrating from higher-price import brands frequently prefer manual transmissions, especially automotive enthusiasts. Now those buyers can have a manual and their creature comforts.

Post Icon New 2013 Ford Fusion NASCAR Sprint Cup Car

The 2013 Ford Fusion NASCAR Sprint Cup car, unveiled yesterday as part of the Charlotte Motor Speedway Media Tour, was worked on by Ford designers in an effort to bring brand identity back to the sport. The result is undeniable with the 2013 Sprint Cup car mirroring the recently unveiled 2013 Ford Fusion production car.

Featuring a completely redesigned sleek new silhouette and fresh face, the 2013 Fusion Sprint Cup car was designed to be the face of a new era of stock car racing.

”We wanted Fusion to be the car that helped return ‘stock car’ to NASCAR.” stated Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “I think fans, when they see the car, are just going to smile and cheer. It is going to reengage them with the sport and make the sport better because there is just something natural about seeing race cars that look like cars in their driveways.”

This marks the third time Ford simultaneously launched production and NASCAR versions of a new model. The first dual launch came in 1968, with the sleek fastback Ford Torino. Legendary NASCAR driver David Pearson drove the Torino to back-to-back NASCAR championships in 1968 and 1969. The second time came in 2006, when the then newly introduced Ford Fusion appeared in showrooms and on the track.

The new NASCAR Fusion entries will be tested throughout the 2012 campaign in preparation for their racing debut at the 2013 Daytona 500 in February.

Post Icon January Note from Tom Barton

Dear Beach Ford Family,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Season and have had a good start to 2012! I want to thank everyone in our Beach Ford Family for making 2011 a great year. For the second year in a row, Beach Ford’s new vehicle sales improved by over 20% and our service and parts sales also showed improvement vs. the previous year. Our family of customers is the reason for our success and it feels good to be growing again!

2012 should be another great one for Ford Motor Company and Beach Ford. There are four impressive new models coming out this year that will provide plenty of excitement throughout the year. First, will be a Focus ST sports coupe that will have a 2.0L Ecoboost engine, capable of 250 horse power! This car is really something and will give Beach Ford customers who are into small performance cars, plenty to brag about! This vehicle should be available before Spring.

Next will be a re-freshed 2013 Taurus with enough of a new look to reinvigorate the full size, upscale buyer who appreciates a little luxury without paying the luxury price tag.

Then comes the all new, completely re-designed, 2013 Ford Escape! This vehicle will be available in the Spring also, and is a beauty with a sleek new design that will change the way you look at a small SUV.

Later this Summer, the 2013 Ford Fusion will make its way to our showroom floor. I have seen this vehicle in its planning stages for over two years on my trips to Dearborn. It is nothing short of stunning. It just won “Car of the Show” at the Detroit Auto Show that is going on through January 20th. I know of no other mid-size sedan with as much elegant style as the new Fusion – it will be truly a game changing product for us and it will be available this summer. The best way to describe it is “Aston – Martin infused with plenty of Detroit DNA!” Just beautiful!

It was not so long ago that I might struggle a bit when writing a column like this, concerning future products. There just wasn’t that much coming out – at least worth writing about, anyway. Ford makes this easy now and it makes this business more exciting and more fulfilling than ever. I look forward to seeing you at our showroom sometime soon! It is going to be an exciting year!

Thank you for being a part of the Beach Ford Family,

Tom Barton

Post Icon Fusion Named Autoweek’s “Best in Show” at NAIAS

Just days after being revealed to the world, the new Ford Fusion is already bringing home awards. The Autoweek editorial staff has chosen Fusion for its Best in Show award at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

The selection is based on one compelling measurement – the car people will remember most five years from now.

“It’s very rare for a midsize sedan to win Best in Show,” said Autoweek Editor Wes Raynal. “I think it’s the first of a lot of awards the Fusion is going to win this year.”

The highest award from Autoweek comes just one day after the car received the prestigious Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology’s EyesOn Design award at NAIAS.

Fusion is the first sedan to offer gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions – each expected to deliver top fuel economy and an engaging driving experience.

“I’ve been with the company for 13 years,” said J Mays, Ford chief creative officer, “and I can truly say this is the best car ever to come out of the design and engineering center in Dearborn. We are delighted for the entire global design team, because this really was a global effort.”

Smart, sleek and fresh, the new Fusion is set to change how people think about midsize sedans.

Five Ford models have been chosen as being the best buy for the money – the most of any automaker – by U.S. News & World Report.

The awards help everyday car buyers navigate the car market by identifying vehicles that offer the biggest bang for the buck and best incorporate the features today’s car buyers want.

The 2012 Ford Edge, Fusion, Fusion Hybrid, Taurus and Fiesta were selected for their quality and value. The awards are determined by combining quality and value data into a composite score

The Ford Edge

The 2012 Ford Edge received attention this year for its new four-cylinder Ecoboost engine.

“The 2012 Ford Edge earned a 2012 Best Car for the Money Award by U.S. News Cars and TrueCar.com for its combination of interior tech, fuel economy and price,” says U.S. News. “That means it’s a better value than any other affordable midsize SUV with two rows of seats.”

The Ford Fusion

The 2012 Ford Fusion was ranked 1 out of 18 Affordable Midsize Cars. U.S. News reviewers say that the 2012 Ford Fusion is “practical, fun to drive, and has a high-quality interior.”

The Fusion is the 2012 U.S. News Best Affordable Midsize Car for the Money. It won this award, partially, for its low cost of long-term ownership. “Not only does the Fusion offer an appealing driving experience,” writes U.S. News, “But its spacious interior and numerous high-tech features make it a good value in its segment.”

The Ford Fusion Hybrid
U.S. News reviewers say, “If you’re in the market for a midsize hybrid that performs like a gas-only car, you should look no further than the Ford Fusion Hybrid.” Many auto writers say it’s their favorite Ford Fusion model, and some even say it’s the best hybrid on the market. Automobile Magazine says, “Overall I’d say this is the best mid-size hybrid you can buy.”

“Not only does the Ford Fusion Hybrid have good fuel economy, but it gives drivers an engaging experience behind the wheel,” writes U.S. News. “Its roomy interior, high-tech electronics and superb handling make it a good value in its segment.”

The Ford Taurus

The 2012 Ford Taurus ranks 1 out of 7 Affordable Large Cars. Among the many reasons why critics love the 2012 Ford Taurus are its good performance, stylish design and excellent cabin electronics. “The Taurus stands out for its comfortable and spacious cabin, excellent interior tech, balanced ride and low base price,” says U.S. News.

Consumer Guide writes, “Ford’s Taurus has a lot going for it. This large sedan is smooth, quiet, refined, and is surprisingly engaging to drive.”

The Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta was ranked 1 out of 40 Affordable Small Cars. “The 2012 Ford Fiesta is a well-rounded small car that offers good driving dynamics, a comfortable interior and competitive interior tech for the class,” says U.S. News.

Post Icon The All-New Ford Fusion

Ford’s all-new Fusion is the first sedan to offer gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions – each expected to deliver top fuel economy.

The all-new Fusion is the latest in a series of vehicles from Ford developed to satisfy customers everywhere looking for leading fuel efficiency, helpful technologies and game-changing looks.

“Our vision for Fusion was clear – deliver the very best of what ‘One Ford’ stands for,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president of Global Product Development. “We brought our global teams together around a blank slate with the charge to develop a midsize car with ground- breaking design and jaw-dropping fuel economy – one that featured technologies to help make our customers safer and better drivers. This car is the result.”

Technologies
Lane Keeping System: This class-exclusive technology consists of three elements to help a driver maintain proper lane position. Using a small, forward-facing camera behind the inside rearview mirror, the system “looks” down the road, monitoring lane lines to determine that the car is on course. The system will alert a driver if drowsiness or erratic lane-keeping is detected. The second element warns a driver with a steering wheel vibration if the Fusion drifts too close to lane markings. Finally, lane keeping aid will actually apply pressure on the steering to help bring the car back into proper lane position.

Adaptive cruise control: Using forward-looking radar, this system “looks” down the road when activated, slowing the Fusion when slower traffic is detected ahead. Adaptive cruise control enables collision warning with brake support to help slow the car if the potential of a crash is detected.

Active park assist: Employing sensors, this technology can identify a suitable parallel parking space, calculate the trajectory and steer the car to properly position it within the spot. All a driver need do is operate accelerator and brake pedals.

Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with cross-traffic alert: Sensors in both Fusion rear quarter-panels are able to detect traffic in a driver’s blind spot, providing both audible and visual warnings if traffic – unseen by the driver – is detected. BLIS technology enables cross-traffic alert, warning the driver of oncoming traffic when backing out of a parking space with obstructed views, such as between two large vans

Design:
Silhouette innovation: Fusion’s sleek profile sets it apart from the powertrain/cabin/trunk “three-box” designs synonymous with midsize sedans

Technical graphics: Fusion’s functional design elements such as headlamps, LED taillamps and polished exhaust tips communicate enhanced technological capability.

Inside: The new Fusion offers a sporty, driver-oriented environment with next-generation seating that brings expanded functionality. A higher center console supports the driver-centric theme and yields clever storage for items a driver wants to keep handy.

More Space: Additional passenger space was designed-in by moving the instrument panel toward the windshield, contributing to the cabin’s airy, open environment.

Post Icon Exciting New Things for the 2013 Ford Mustang

Ford Mustang just received a new design and a list of new technology features.

“The new Mustang is the perfect example of continuing to build on excellence. It takes the greatness of the 5.0-liter and V6 and pushes the refinement to the next level,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer. “The car has been spot-on functionally and now we’re adding more features and technology to further improve the driver’s experience.”

More aggressive design
The new model Mustang, which goes on sale in spring 2012, offers a more aggressive design with a significantly more prominent grille. A more powerful splitter adds to that appearance. Functional heat extractors on the hood of the GT were specifically placed and designed to help move hot air out of the engine compartment and cool the engine.

“We are delivering a more distinctive and emotional design presence that celebrates the total performance of Mustang,” said Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer. “This latest Mustang design is very respectful of its heritage while continuing to look forward with a more powerful and modern look.”

Rocker panels running along the car are now body-color, making for a more premium appearance. The rear has been updated with a high-gloss black panel that connects the tail lamps.

Also new for Mustang design are standard high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps on both V6 and GT cars. Signature lighting plays into the technology upgrades for 2013 as well, with two individual light-emitting diode (LED) bars accentuating the front headlamps and three LED ropes forming the iconic three-bar rear lights.

The new car also offers mirrors with pony projection light, which casts the image of Mustang’s famous pony emblem on the ground when the unlock button is activated. New colors – Deep Impact Blue and Gotta Have It Green – join the existing sporty colors for 2013.

New driving technologies
The 2013 Mustang with 5.0-liter engine will now deliver 420 horsepower.

It can be specified with a six-speed SelectShift Automatic™ transmission. This advanced control strategy offers the driver a choice between fully automatic operation and manual control.

“This lets owners take an automatic out on a track day or whenever they want to drive sportier, and lets them have the convenience of switching to manual control,” said Tom Barnes, Mustang vehicle engineering manager. “It’s a significant improvement to our powertrain offerings that lets the driver take control.”

Hill start assist makes its debut on manually equipped Mustangs. This feature helps keep the car from rolling backward, making it easier to pull away when on a slope or hill. With the brake pedal pressed, if sensors detect the car is on a slope, the system is automatically activated.

A new 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen that lets customers access information related to fuel economy and vehicle performance also makes its debut on Mustang. The screen is navigated through a five-way control button located on the steering wheel and offers Track Apps, which delivers performance metrics for drivers right from the factory. The app measures g forces, shows acceleration times in quarter-mile and 0-60 increments, and displays braking times, complete with automatic and countdown starts.

The 2013 Mustang also offers customers two new audio systems for even better sound quality for incredible clarity and crispness. The optional Shaker™ system comes with eight speakers and pumps out 370 watts of power. The upgraded Shaker Pro offers nine speakers and delivers 550 watts of power.

Post Icon How Ford Engineers Designed One Car for Body Sizes Around the Globe

Launching the new global Ford Focus posed many challenges for the designers and engineers at Ford. Something customers may not realize is the lengths they went to in order to accommodate the different and growing sizes of drivers from around the world.

Ford utilizes the latest data gained from 3D body scans carried out on a large range of ages and races to make sure they can cater for all global populations.
“We use a global statistical database that gives us accurate size ranges of drivers in different parts of the world,” said Ralph Gesang, supervisor, Driving Environment. “It shows not only heights but also the different types of body statures. This information helped us ensure that more than 97 per cent of the world’s adult population can sit comfortably in the new Focus.”

The database includes some of the most up-to-date anthropometric information (data collected from measuring human beings with the purpose of understanding physical variation), with cross-sections of adults in a number of different continents being scanned by laser from head to toe.

Ford engineers used this information to make detailed virtual studies of the interior design, looking at the space, comfort and safety of driver and passengers.
“The latest 3D body data directly influenced the development of the seat travel, the cushion shape and the adjustment range of the steering wheel and foot pedals,” said Ralf Nürnberg, Ford’s attribute leader, Occupant Accommodation. “Back seat head and leg room also were influenced when we visualized the 3D human models in our computer simulations of the new Focus.

“As well as the broad regional variations, the latest 3D body data also reflects the fact that, on average, the global population is getting taller and heavier, and the new Focus interior takes account of this trend.”

According to scientific studies, the average human height in industrialized parts of the world has increased by around 4 inches in the past 150 years due in part to better living conditions and improved diet. This type of historical data can also be used to predict the potentially rapid growth of people from developing countries.

Regional differences can even come down to drink preferences. In Europe, storage for a 1.5-litre water bottle is a customer want, whereas in China, tea containers are often carried in cars. Both were taken into account when designing the door pockets of the new Focus, ensuring customer needs were met without compromising the driver’s ability to sit comfortably and easily control the vehicle.

Areas outside of the cockpit were subjected to the same high level of scrutiny as those inside. For example, in some regions of the world, the average height and arm length is noticeably lower than elsewhere. For these regions, the maximum opening height of the rear tailgate was lowered to maintain a comfortable reach.

The overall result is that the new Ford Focus combines a stylish, aerodynamic exterior design with highly competitive interior space. By considering the greater range of shapes and sizes of the global customer base, the engineers at Ford have worked to ensure that, no matter where in the world it’s sold, the new Focus is a good fit for customers.

Post Icon Focus ST at Frankfurt Motor Show

Ford’s first global performance car, the new Focus ST, is finally out of production. The new model combines strong performance, exceptional handling, eye-catching style and everyday refinement. Focus ST will launch around the world in 2012, being sold in over 40 countries spanning six continents.

Powered by a 2.0-liter Ford EcoBoost engine mated to a specially revised six-speed manual transmission, Focus ST offers an uncompromising mix of performance and efficiency. The lightweight, all-aluminum engine delivers a maximum output of 250PS (246 hp) and peak torque of 360Nm (265 lb/ft), yet helps cut CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by more than 20 percent compared to the previous-generation European Focus ST.

Alongside the five-door model, Ford is also revealing a special treat for European customers – the stylish Focus ST Wagon. A unique offering in the segment, the Wagon shows just how far the performance DNA of an ST model can stretch.

“There’s nothing comparable in the market to the Focus ST Wagon,” said Jost Capito, director of Global Performance Vehicles. “It builds on the practical element of the Focus ST but doesn’t take away any of the performance, handling abilities or refinement of the five-door model. Wagons are very popular in many of the major European countries so we have high hopes for the ST wagon being a great success.”

More than 400 Transit Connect Taxis are destined for New York City in all. Total orders for Transit Connect Taxis across the United States are fast approaching 1,000 in its first year on the market. The new taxi market in the U.S. averages about 6,000 units.

“Taxi operators are realizing the Transit Connect Taxi is a great vehicle and there’s a good reason – they helped us develop it,” said Len Deluca, director, Ford Commercial Trucks. “During product development, we visited cities across the U.S. speaking with taxi owners, operators, drivers and city officials on the key product attributes they wanted in a taxi.”

The result is today’s Ford Transit Connect Taxi, a vehicle that has been winning over customers from coast to coast.

“I drove it personally and found it to be a lot more comfortable than any other taxi I’ve ever driven,” said Chris Harisopoulos, general manager, McGuinness Management. “The roominess is another great thing about this vehicle, both for passengers and drivers, along with its overall durability. It’s just a great taxi.”
Cities where taxicab company operators have ordered Transit Connect Taxis in addition to New York include Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, St. Louis, Tampa, Fla., Orlando, Fla., Hartford, Conn. and West Haven, Conn.

“The Transit Connect Taxi provides the necessary durability needed for the harshest of conditions, from the desert-like conditions of Las Vegas to extreme New England winters,” said Larry Gach, sales manager, Ford Commercial Truck Sales and Marketing.

The standard Ford Transit Connect – 2010 North American Truck of the Year – features a 2.0-liter I-4 engine that gets 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, an improvement of about 30 percent compared with traditional taxis.

Post Icon New Ford Focus Selected for “LG Brand Ambassador” Program

LG Electronics USA has selected the 2012 Ford Focus as the vehicle of choice for its “LG Brand Ambassador” team of in-store merchandising experts. Two hundred Ford Focus hatchbacks will take to the roads, wrapped in LG’s logo and “Life’s Good” slogan.

According to James Fishler, senior vice president, Go-to-Market Operations, LG Electronics USA, the Ford Focus was selected for its fuel-efficient and innovative attributes.

“We selected the Focus based on its striking design, fuel economy and functional flexibility,” Fishler said. “Its SYNC® hands-free technology also enables us to communicate with our team in a safe way. In all, the Ford Focus attributes resonate with our brand attributes of stylish design and smart technology, making it an easy choice.”

Putting LG Brand Ambassadors on the road in the Ford Focus is a new initiative by LG to help establish a consistent image as they traverse the country delivering LG’s brand message to retailers and consumers.

Post Icon Consumers Drive Ford Focus Electric Simulator

Potential customers are getting a chance to help develop the final in-dash display for the Ford Focus Electric through the use of a specially designed driving simulator.

The feedback is helping Ford engineers make sure the Focus Electric’s unique version of the MyFord Touch is easy to use and meets the needs of potential owners. The new Ford Focus Electric uses the high-tech driver interface to help drivers optimize range of fuel-free driving.

When stepping into the simulator, a user sees exactly the same information that would appear in the real Ford Focus Electric, including two 4.2-inch full-color LCD screens flanking the speedometer in the center. These screens provide details on battery state of charge, distance to charge point, the corresponding budget and expected range surplus.

“These screens are an integral part of Focus Electric and we thought the best way to make sure they would do their job is to have people come in and try them out for themselves,” said Paul Aldighieri, HMI engineer. “The only true way to get a feel for what the screens are telling the driver is by actually getting behind the wheel.”

Many drivers have participated in the simulator exercise since last year. Studies evaluated how well participants comprehended the gauge concepts and validated the gauge design. Feedback showed the core behaviors of the system were well understood, and the engineering team received feedback on how to improve the interface. The team incorporated the feedback and received high acceptance levels for the new graphics.

Additionally, engineers received feedback on alternatives for the terminology used to represent what eventually became the charge point, budget and surplus screens.

Graphically representing surplus mileage beyond charge point destination was identified by this group as a benefit. One guest indicated he had recently gone to the movies with some friends in his electric car. After the movies, one of his friends asked if they could go out for ice cream; this particular guest had to discourage that as he had not accounted for it in planning the evening’s travels. After seeing Ford’s surplus gauge, he thought this would have given him better data to consider adding on a spontaneous stop to get ice cream.

Making efficiency fun
MyFord Touch on the all-new Focus Electric offers drivers unique features that provide easy-to-understand information about range, destinations and charge points.

For those who want more in-depth information, the cluster’s MyView feature offers greater personalization choices. Using five-way buttons on the steering wheel, Focus Electric owners can configure their own custom information screen in the left display.

Post Icon A Note From Tom Barton: Ford is Back in the CAR Business!

Dear Beach Ford Family,

It’s good to be back! Back in the CAR business, I mean. For the last decade or more, Ford has really only been in the truck and SUV business – yes, we still sold a lot of Mustangs, but Mustang is really a different animal than the regular, to-and-from work, everyday car transportation. The dollars made on large SUV’s and trucks and relatively low fuel costs, unfortunately, caused the Detroit manufacturers to invest less in their car offerings and to almost ignore the small, fuel-efficient segments. Fortunately, the Ford Motor Company has seen the error of their ways and now has world-class offerings ranging from the fuel-sipping, but well appointed Fiesta, all the way up to the affordable luxury of the new Taurus! At Beach Ford, it feels great to be back in the car business!

Two of the hottest new cars in the business, are the 2012 Ford Focus and the 2012 Ford Fiesta.

The Fiesta is the smallest vehicle offering, but don’t let it’s size fool you – in addition to getting over 40 mpg/hwy, this vehicle has plenty of power thanks to its 1.6L, 4 cylinder engine and its features are like those found on much higher-end cars. It is a car for people who just prefer a small car and don’t want to compromise on ride or amenities. From its sound system to SYNC to its interior, you will feel like you’re driving a small luxury car made for the Autobahn!

With Focus, you get a slightly larger car equipped with a 2.0L, 4-cylinder engine that is capable of 40 mpg/hwy and a body style reminiscent of European sports sedans. This, again, is a car with all the modern technology and amenities that are typically not found in smaller cars! You really need to drive this car, as its lower cost of operation and its superior styling may just have you driving a smaller car than you ever thought about. This is a real game-changer!

Having a full compliment of larger cars, as well as the appealing smaller, fuel-efficient ones makes me glad to be a Ford dealer. For too long, we were just good at making world-class trucks – now we make the cars to go along. Every day, people stop me in the dealership and remark about how far Ford cars have come. Having a no apologies car line-up makes our dealership more complete and able to service a far greater spectrum of clientele. Come see us at Beach Ford, even if you aren’t in the market for a car! I know you’ll be impressed!

Post Icon 15 Million Ford Fiestas Produced Worldwide

The Ford Fiesta is celebrating two milestones in the summer of 2011, reaching its 35th birthday with a total of 15 million cars produced worldwide.

The Ford Fiesta reached the 15 million production landmark this month, a figure boosted by the popularity of the latest generation model. Ford has built a million of the current model since it debuted 28 months ago.

As Europe’s best-selling small car in 2009, 2010 and on track to accomplish the same feat in 2011, the Fiesta is one of Ford’s greatest success stories – appealing to several generations of drivers with its attractive styling, practicality, efficiency and performance.

“Times and technologies have changed,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe. “But as long as the Fiesta continues to deliver the style, economy and performance elements that have been present from the very beginning, it will remain an enduring success.”

To keep the Fiesta’s dynamic styling and customer appeal as fresh as ever, Ford is introducing a number of exterior and interior styling changes.

“With 15 million sales worldwide, the customer response to the Fiesta as a small car package speaks for itself, and we hope the carefully selected upgrades to the current Fiesta will further improve its appeal to small car drivers across the globe,” said Waard.

The very first Fiesta was produced in Valencia, Spain, in 1976 as Ford’s practical and economical response to a fuel crisis that was gripping the world, and it immediately tapped into a small car demand in Europe and around the world.

Thirty-five years, six generations and 15 million cars after its debut, the Fiesta continues to offer practicality, style and efficiency to car buyers of all ages.

Post Icon The Birth of Action Motorsports

As a way to reach younger consumers and ignite their passion for its vehicles, Ford Motor Company is expanding its motorsports programs to encompass action sports, one of the most viewed sporting events today.

“Millennials comprise nearly one-third of the adult population in the United States, and they have gravitated toward stage rally, rallycross and drifting,” said Jamie Allison, director of Ford North America Motorsports. “They consume motorsports differently than other segments of the population – online and through gaming – and so we are going where the fans and consumers are. To reach younger enthusiasts and consumers and to ignite their passion for Ford, we are expanding our motorsports programs to encompass action sports.”

Nontraditional forms of motorsport – drifting and rallycross, and stage rally and off-road truck racing among younger demographics – have captured the fascination of many around the globe and are becoming the motorsports of choice for Millennials.

Ford Racing has significantly increased its presence in action motorsports during the past three years. The performance powertrain engineering exercise began in drifting in 2005, and now it’s a multidiscipline four-athlete action motorsports program based squarely on reaching a valuable market.

The next step in the process is the formation of the Octane Academy founded by Ford, an ongoing consumer program that will allow Ford enthusiasts to experience the world of action sports with the athletes who are defining the culture and the competition.

“Our involvement in action motorsports with drivers such as Ken Block, Brian Deegan, Tanner Foust and Vaughn Gittin Jr. and through Octane Academy gives Ford Motor Company a high-profile place in the action sports culture,” said John Felice, general marketing manager at Ford Motor Company. “The fact these athletes have chosen Ford allows us to engage with a new generation of Ford owners in a way that’s relevant to them. We repeatedly see a Ford Racing fan is more likely to buy a Ford product when they are in the market for a car or truck.”

Post Icon New Fiesta Sport Special Edition

With eye-catching style, the Fiesta Sport Special Edition has an even bolder, more distinctive and sportier appearance.

Powerful 1.6-liter engine options also ensure that the Fiesta Sport Special Edition delivers on the road. The new model has the most potent powertrain available in the current Fiesta line-up, alongside a powerful yet frugal 95PS Duratorq TDCi – which returns 107g of CO2 and a combined fuel economy of 57.4mpg.

The Duratec Ti-VCT gas engine has an output of 134PS at 6,700rpm and produces 160Nm torque at 4,250rpm, combined with close-ratio gearing and a redeveloped exhaust system to give the Fiesta Sport Special Edition 0-62mph acceleration of 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 122mph.

“The Fiesta boasts a rich sporting heritage and the combination of the free-revving 1.6-liter Duratec Ti-VCT petrol engine and dynamic, contemporary styling inside and out means the Fiesta Sport Special Edition is a worthy addition to Ford’s roll-call of performance models,” said Roelant de Waard, Vice President, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe.

“Of course, the option of a 1.6-liter Duratorq-powered version also means customers not requiring such high performance can still enjoy a sporty character with improved economy, while reaping the benefits of the Fiesta Sport Special Edition’s great looks and excellent equipment levels.”

Panther Black alloy wheels complete the Fiesta Sport Special Edition’s exterior upgrades, with 17-inch examples filling the sports arches on the petrol version and 16-inch alloy wheels for TDCi-equipped cars. Silver alloy wheels are also available as an option.

Ford Fiesta Sport Special Edition customers will have up to seven vibrant exterior paint options to choose from, including the Panther Black option used on the alloy wheels, and the black and silver contrast theme continues to the interior where Ebony Black heated leather sports seats with silver stitching provide a comfortable and supportive base from which to enjoy the performance and appreciate the identically upholstered steering wheel, complete with gloss black spokes.

Post Icon The 2012 Ford Focus Serves as Pace Car for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

The all-new 2012 Ford Focus, which delivers an EPA-certified 40 miles per gallon on the highway, served yesterday as pace car at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at the Michigan International Speedway.

While NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers had to pit five or six times during the 400-mile race, the 2012 Focus, with its outstanding fuel economy, could go race distance and more, pushing 497 miles (or 248 laps at Michigan International Speedway) before needing to pit.

Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas, was behind the wheel Sunday as the “celebrity” pace car driver.

“Bringing the 43-car field to the green flag will be an honor, but the real highlight of my day will be showing millions of race fans at MIS and across the country how much fun the new Focus is to drive,” Fields said before the race. “Focus delivers on high-speed ovals, challenging, twisty roads and everything in between. This car – built right here in Michigan – is built for people who love to drive.”

Focus is Ford’s most significant global car with more than 10 million units sold since being launched in 1998.

“When I saw the new Focus, I couldn’t believe it,” said Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne. “I think this car is going to appeal to a lot of young people like myself because it offers the latest technology and has that sporty look many of us want when we go shopping for a car.”

Ford hopes consumers nationwide share Bayne’s reaction.

“Just like last year when we unveiled Fiesta as the Michigan pace car, we’re using this race as a platform to promote another one of our fun-to-drive, fuel-efficient vehicles,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “Focus is a fantastic car that has captured the imagination of consumers everywhere, and we hope our fans are going to like what they see when it hits the track on Sunday.”

Ford has been at the forefront of using its NASCAR pace car program to highlight its extensive line of new cars, trucks and sport utility vehicles. This includes being the first company to have Hybrid pace the start of a NASCAR race when the Fusion Hybrid led the field to green for the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2009. In addition, the Mustang GT 5.0L V-8 and all-new 2011 Explorer SUV have served as pace vehicles within the last year.

Post Icon The All-New Police Interceptor to Lower Fuel Costs for Law Enforcement

Ford’s all-new Police Interceptor will save America’s law enforcement agencies millions of dollars a year on fuel costs.

With three powerful and fuel-efficient V6 engines, the new Police Interceptor lineup is expected to deliver average fuel economy gains of 20 to 25 percent over the Crown Victoria, which ends production later this year. The market leader for the past 15 years, the current Crown Victoria police car is rated at 14 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department – the largest sheriff’s department in the world – operates a fleet of 6,200 vehicles that patrol an area the size of Connecticut. In 2010, those vehicles drove more than 27 million miles. A fleet-wide 20 percent fuel economy gain would save the department at least $20 million a year at today’s fuel prices of nearly $4 per gallon.

“We set out to deliver our new portfolio of Police Interceptors to be industry-leading from durability to performance, including taking on one of the most important challenges for agencies today, fuel efficiency,” said Kevin Koswick, director of Ford’s North American Fleet Operations. “With Ford’s new Police Interceptors, we took the industry benchmark, our Crown Victoria, and improved every element including delivering up to a 25 percent improvement in fuel economy.”

The improved efficiency of the new Police Interceptors is part of Ford’s corporate goal to lead or be among the leaders in fuel economy in every segment in which the company competes.

Post Icon Ford Uses New Advertising Techniques to Explain the New Technologies in the Ford Focus

The new Focus is the highest-tech and most globally integrated car Ford has ever produced.

“One out of every four vehicles sold worldwide is from the C-segment. Ford is creating new ways to cut through the clutter and win consumers’ attention with information they care about most – technology that improves their lives,” said Jim Farley, group vice president of Global Marketing, Sales and Service.

The way the company is introducing the new product to worldwide consumers is a first of its kind, too.

“We had to find a way to talk about all the new features and technologies, delivering everything from better fuel economy to hands-free connectivity with mobile devices and even a more fun driving experience,” says Farley. “And we had to do it in a quick and engaging way.”

Ford partnered with a team of marketing experts throughout WPP’s global operations to simultaneously develop 50 television commercials highlighting 14 key Focus technologies, many of which never have been offered in the segment before or are not available on competitors’ larger, more expensive models.

The quick-hitting spots – generally 15 seconds for North American audiences and 20 seconds for European ones – are tailored for worldwide markets where Focus will be sold. The collection marks Ford’s first-ever global product advertising campaign.

“This seems especially fitting, given the new Focus is Ford’s first global product created from day one under our One Ford plan, which drives us to better leverage our global assets and deliver profitable growth,” Farley said.

Post Icon Ford and Lincoln Lead in Fuel Economy

Ford and Lincoln have 12 cars, trucks and utilities that lead their sales segments in fuel economy, including four with EPA-certified ratings of 40 mpg or more.

“Fuel economy and technology are consumers’ biggest priorities – and we have made them Ford’s as well,” said Mark Fields, Ford president, The Americas. “Our product portfolio reflects the investment Ford has made to transform our lineup in the past several years so our customers can be more green – and keep even more green in their wallets – than when fuel prices reached $4 per gallon in 2008.”

Now, the company’s lineup features improved aerodynamics and fuel-saving technologies including PowerShift, six-speed automatic transmissions, electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) and EcoBoost engines that save on fuel with no compromise to driving excitement.

The newest Ford vehicle in the fuel economy winner’s circle is the all-new Focus SFE, which has been EPA certified at 40 mpg highway and 28 mpg city. Focus joins the 41 mpg city Fusion Hybrid and 40 mpg highway Fiesta in Ford’s 40 mpg and over club.

In addition, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in America with its 41 mpg city EPA-certified rating, helping make Ford and Lincoln vehicles the most fuel efficient in the company’s 107-year history.

The arrival of the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine later this year in the Edge crossover and Explorer SUV will see two more nameplates join Ford’s best-in-class mpg club.

More Ford fuel economy stars include:

Ford Mustang V6: Its V6 engine and six-speed automatic deliver best-in-class highway fuel economy of 31 mpg; Mustang V6 is the first car in history to deliver the combination of 300-plus horsepower and more than 30 mpg

Ford F-150: Its 302-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic deliver a best-in-class 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway – an EPA rating Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra can’t top. The 3.7-liter V6 is one of four all-new truck engines in the 2011 F-150 lineup

Ford Fiesta: The combination of a 120-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder and available six-speed dual-clutch PowerShift automatic transmission delivers 40 mpg on the highway, topping Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit by 4 mpg and 5 mpg, respectively

Ford Super Duty: The Ford-designed and Ford-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel engine delivers as much as 20 percent better fuel economy than the 6.4-liter it replaced. The new Power Stroke isn’t just fuel efficient, it’s also the most powerful diesel pickup engine money can buy, rated at 400 horsepower and 800 lb.-ft. of torque

Ford Edge: With its 3.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic, Edge delivers 19 mpg city and a best-in-class 27 mpg highway. The upcoming 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine in the 2012 Edge is expected to deliver even greater economy

Ford Fusion Hybrid remains America’s most fuel-efficient midsize family sedan, topping the Toyota Camry Hybrid by 10 mpg in the city, according to the EPA

Post Icon Ford’s All-New Fiesta RS World Rally Car

Ford’s all-new Fiesta RS World Rally Car is set to receive final clearance for its FIA World Rally Championship debut this week when motorsport’s governing body gives it the seal of approval to compete in Rally Sweden next month.

This means that Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen and team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila will put the Fiesta RS WRC through its paces for the first time in the WRC when the 13-round season begins in Sweden (10 February).

“We worked closely with the FIA throughout the development of the car to ensure our understanding of the regulations was aligned with that of the governing body,” said Ford of Europe’s motorsport chief, Gerard Quinn. “We expect the paperwork to be finalized this week, and everyone involved with the program is looking forward to an exciting season ahead, with the action beginning over Sweden’s frozen roads in 10 days.”

1.6-litre Ford EcoBoost technology
The 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection engine that powers the rally car draws on the knowledge of Ford’s advanced EcoBoost technology, used in its latest production cars.

Quinn said: “Ford’s EcoBoost road engine represents a new generation of downsized, high-efficiency engines. Developed by Ford engineers in Europe, the four-cylinder EcoBoost production unit combines high-pressure direct injection, advanced turbocharging and twin variable valve timing to maximize combustion efficiency. Different displacements are already available in Ford road vehicles around the globe.

“The knowledge accumulated during the design of the EcoBoost road engine proved invaluable during development of the rally car unit. Technology transfer usually switches from rally cars to road vehicles, but in this situation we’re delighted it has taken the opposite route,” he added.

Post Icon New Focus Becomes Ford’s Next Touring Race Car

Ford made an announcement at the 2010 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas that the company plans to leverage the all-new Focus for motorsports by supporting the development of a next-generation touring car for global competition. This is just one more indication of the company’s comprehensive approach to leveraging its global product platform.

The move extends Ford’s reputation for offering race-capable, affordable platforms that can be converted into a race car, including Mustang and most recently, Fiesta.

The Focus will be developed with private race teams and will take over as Ford’s global touring car.

“There has been tremendous interest from the racing world about the new Focus, and it’s the perfect fit for a global touring car,” said Jost Capito, director of Global Performance Vehicles and Motorsports Business Development. “Even more, by working with professional private race teams, we’re ensuring Focus has the support it needs to compete and win.”

The benefits of the Focus touring car will stretch beyond the track.

“Ford’s commitment to using motorsports to influence high-performance vehicles will be highly evident, as the development of the Focus touring car will benefit the upcoming Focus ST production car,” said Capito. “It’s very similar to how the Mustang team was able to apply learnings from the Ford Racing Boss 302R to the 2012 Mustang Boss 302.”

Focus is planned to make its first race appearance at the 2011 British Touring Car Championship. The race car has the potential to run in many championships globally, including the China Touring Car Championship and 24-hour endurance races like the classic Nürburgring in Germany. The global Focus race car will be powered by Ford’s EcoBoost™ engine technology which will go into production in the Focus ST.

Professional private race teams are helping Ford develop common technical specifications for the race car, which will conform to FIA Super 2000 regulations with potential to adopt to other regulations. Ford supports the race teams by providing data, advanced engineering tools, state-of-the-art testing facilities and production parts, so the teams can race more competitive cars that are developed with greater efficiency.

Post Icon The Ford Fiesta’s 2010 SEMA Debut

People love to modify small cars, so it’s no surprise that consumers and aftermarket companies are eager to get their hands on Ford’s hot-selling Fiesta, set to debut at this year’s SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show in Las Vegas Nov. 2-5.

“The Fiesta is one of those vehicles that resonates with everybody – especially with the younger market. Whatever you’re into, it works,” said Melvin Betancourt, Ford specialty design manager. “It lends itself to a lot of different themes. It’s a perfect fit for the aftermarket and for customers who want to express their personality.”

“SEMA offers the perfect opportunity to showcase all the different ways the personalities of the Fiesta can be expressed,” said Sam De La Garza, Fiesta brand manager.

“It really shows how Fiesta can be accessorized and how this canvas can be altered to meet many different customer wants and desires,” De La Garza said. “SEMA represents a special opportunity, because we can show off unique designs that other companies have created. It’s not just Ford coming to the table. It’s other companies interpreting what Fiesta is, and bringing their own style to the Fiesta launch.”

Customization is something already familiar to Fiesta owners. Ford Custom Accessories offers almost anything an owner would need to put a creative touch on Fiesta or give the car even more functionality. Accessory options include exterior or interior design items such as an illuminated gear indicator shift knob and rear spoiler, even a kayak carrier to haul outdoor gear. Customers also can order a body-side tattoo, or choose from one of 18 available graphics to put their own mark on Fiesta.

“Small cars are unique in that people love to modify them, whether it’s the exterior, interior, or even performance parts,” De La Garza said.

Ford Racing Performance Parts is putting its own spin on a Fiesta at SEMA. The Fiesta will have a production-based 2.0-liter EcoBoost™ engine, enlarged to 2.3 liters to pump out 350 horsepower.

“The goal of our 350-horsepower Fiesta is really twofold – first to reinforce Fiesta’s fun-to-drive nature with an extreme version that captures the attention of the influential enthusiast, and second, to introduce the Ford Racing/EcoBoost connection in a way that’s unexpected and outrageous,” said Mickey Matus, Ford Racing Performance group marketing manager. “In both cases, we’re targeting the discriminating performance enthusiast with our message. After all, they are the people others rely on for automotive expertise and recommendations.”
The car comes equipped with several Ford Racing Performance Parts options that are currently available at www.fordracingparts.com. A short-throw shifter offers more precise shifting, while a Ford Racing exhaust gives off a deeper, throatier exhaust note. Also available are 17-inch wheels that are cast-aluminum and painted in charcoal gray.

Additionally, the car features Brembo brakes that offer the ultimate in stopping power, and Ohlins dual-flow valve dampers that deliver comfort and agility.

Ford Racing’s Fiesta will arrive in all-blue, pristine condition, and will be painted by a renowned artist during the show with the intention of auctioning the car in the future to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF).

Post Icon 2010 Mustang Performs Magic Tricks on the Las Vegas Stip

Vaughn Gittin Jr, a world champion drifter, kicked off Ford Mustang’s “10 Unleashed” campaign by taking the car to drift the streets of Japan.

Now, during the tenth and final installment of Unleashed, Gittin is teaming up with Steve Wyrick, a famous Las Vegas magician, to perform one of the biggest illusions to hit the Las Vegas strip.

Imagine Wyrick shackled by police in the middle of the strip, while Gittin races down the strip in a silver 2010 Mustang.

“Our goal was to make the final ’10 unleashed experience something truly unforgettable,” said Steve Ling, N.A. car marketing manager, Ford Motor Company. “To have Vaughn race down the Las Wegas Stip in Spellbinder after kicking off the campaign by drifting the Mustang around Japan was a perfect ending to a great campaign.”
