“…every sunset is merely the latest milestone on a voyage that never ends…” — Ronald Reagan
Four short years ago, the auto industry was in a very bad place. Ford had mortgaged the family jewels to get a loan large enough to avoid an outright bankruptcy and their foes on the other side of Motown were indeed heading into bankruptcy. It was not pretty, back in 2009, for anyone even associated with the car business!
Fortunately for those of us with Ford, however, we were beginning to learn about a new direct-injection, twin turbo charged, powertrain that was supposed to deliver 20% more fuel economy than the regularly aspirated engines that preceded them. No hybrid technology, no expensive batteries, no 6 year pay-back time in gas savings to offset a huge price premium paid at delivery… None of this. And what was even better, the new engines called EcoBoost (“Eco” for fuel-economy and “Boost” for the increased power) not only got the 20% better fuel economy, they were in some cases more powerful than the larger displacement engines they could replace! Ford had invested what little money they had in recent years on something not heard of in the industry – smaller, more fuel-efficient engines with more horsepower! Are you kidding me?!!
Four years on, since those equally dark yet hopeful days in 2009, Ford announced a milestone achievement on September 16, 2013. At the Louisville Kentucky Assembly Plant, Ford produced the 2,000,000th EcoBoost engine – a 2.0 liter for an Escape. Today, Ford produces 5 different EcoBoost powertrains. The 1.0-liter, the 1.5-liter, the 1.6-liter, the 2.0-liter, and the 3.5-liter, all offering great fuel economy and plenty of power! In fact, an F-150 driven for 10 years with a 3.5-liter Ecoboost would save a person $4,000 than if they were driving an F-150 equipped with the old 5.4-liter V8, at today’s gas prices. That’s a lot of money!
Thankfully, Ford continues to experiment and improve new technology in every realm of auto manufacturing. Considering the technological improvements on the engines Ford produces, it is with pride that we call ourselves “The Ford Motor Company!”
